The Corridor
In the small corridor running parallel to the 19th-century room, Cerruti left chronological coherence to make way for a dialogue with works of the 20th century.
The model in patinated plaster by Carlo Marochetti for the equestrian monument in Piazza San Carlo in Turin (c. 1837–38) engages in an unexpected dialogue with Giulio Paolini’s Ebla (1976–77) and a portrait (1907) by Ettore Tito. The series of 19th-century works on the far wall by artists like Lorenzo Delleani, Antonio Fontanesi and Filippo Palizzi find a response in works of the earlier and later 20th century by Federico Zandomeneghi, Roberto Marcello Baldessari, Mario Sironi, Mario Tozzi, Gigi Chessa, Giacomo Manzù, Afro, and Marino Marini. Of particular importance in the corridor are two masterpieces by Andy Warhol: The Poet and His Muse (1982) and a fascinating portrait of the model and later fashion house chief executive Hélène Rochas (1974), a stunning work in sharp contrast to the others in the basement.
