Description
Colette, L’Envers du music-hall gravures de J.-E. Laboureur, R. Coulouma, Argenteuil 1926
This binding was designed by Rose Adler in 1953. Adler (1890-1959) was educated at the École d’Art décoratif (1917-25) and then worked for Jacques Doucet (1924-29) and many important collectors. Initially she was influenced by Pierre Legrain. She was a foundermember of La Société de la Reliure Originale (1945) and in 1951 became a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour; André Jeanne worked as a finisher for almost all the famous binding designers of his time.
There is an earlier, simpler binding by Rose Adler and André Jeanne in the Cerruti Collection: G. de Voisin, Pages à mon goût, with engravings by J.- E. Laboureur, l’Artisan du livre, Paris 1929, designed and finished in 1931. It is illustrated in Paris 1995, no. 20, and in M. M. Foot, “A Binding by Rose Adler and André Jeanne, 1931”, The Book Collector, autumn 2019, pp. 520- 522 (see no. 85, p. 352).
