The Garden

Villa Cerruti is situated in the hilly countryside a few hundred metres away from the Castello di Rivoli and the Manica Lunga or Long Wing adjacent to the Castello. This location can be regarded as frontier territory in the sense that the amphitheatre-like ridge of which the hill forms an integral part joins the upper Po Valley with the Val di Susa. The resulting terrain is characterised by gentle slopes with picturesque views of the range of high mountains above and the valley and plains below.

The villa encapsulates these particular features, stretching out along a somewhat steep slope that characterises the garden and divides it into areas that differ in appearance and use. While the area immediately surrounding the building can be described as formal, obeying precise rules of containment with hedges along the paths and flowering bushes, this is not the case for the rest of the grounds.

Villa Cerruti can be seen as a microcosm. The interior of the building encloses the highest peaks of culture, art and craftsmanship (including books, paintings, sculpture, furniture, carpets, ceramics and silverware) and the exterior attempts to enclose the world of nature in accordance with the same principle of universality.

Alongside the above-mentioned “formal garden,” including a terraced area with lawn adorned with vases and sculptures from Villa Grimaldi Fassio in Genoa, we have the following: the hortus conclusus or enclosed garden, a place of almost monastic meditation; the farm area formerly with a chicken run, vegetable garden and tanks for aquaculture (never actually used as such); the area for play with a large bowling green; the alpine slope looking onto Musiné mountain and Val di Susa with picturesque benches of stone on which to sit and contemplate the view; the bosco with tall evergreens that shade the paths below. There is also a secluded area in the wood, perhaps the most intimate and solemn part of the property as a whole, a dog cemetery for the beloved dogs that – along with his works of art – formed part of his family.
