Kerman in south-east Persia is known for carpet making at least from the mid-17th century under the Safavid dynasty, when it produced articles for export to Europe. The Cerruti rug  has a finely drawn pattern of vases of flowers on a white ground and belongs to the best period of later 19th-century production.
