Description

Structure with four spirally-fluted, conical corner columns each rising from a foliate chalice and topped by a dado and a bulbous finial with leaves slightly parted to reveal pomegranate seeds. The cornices of the headboard and footboard are embellished with rows of small leaves, inclined ovolos and a tight colonnade pattern with niches filled to one third by small cylinders. Trophies of laurel and oak or laurel and acanthus leaves mark the centre of the headboard, footboard and side rails with the particularly elegant touch of a ribbon crumpled to fill the empty space inside the laurel crown. Each of the tapering, fluted, cylindrical legs has a smooth neck and a blunt arrow foot.

Traditionally attributed to Bonzanigo, this handsome bed presents some characteristics that appear at variance with his aristocratically restrained style of carving. The possibility of a French origin cannot be ruled out.
